The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (15-4 overall, 13-3 MIAC) defeated Macalester College 67-53 in St. Joseph, Minn.

Macalester jumped a 6-4 lead before CSB pulled ahead 10-6 with 16 remaining in the half.  At this point, the Blazers compiled a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to lead 23-10.  Both teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes with CSB still securing a 13-point lead.  The Blazers them strung together a 7-2 for an 18-point halftime cushion of 37-19.

An 11-6 CSB run started the second half, and the Blazers continued to keep their lead at 52-29 with 12 minutes remaining in the half.  The Scots started to chip away at the score, picking up a 20-2 lead over CSB to bring the score within five at 54-49 with 3:30 remaining.  The Blazers ended with a bang, stringing a 13-4 run to win the game 67-53.

Leading the Blazes was junior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine), who had 25 points off of 11-for-14 shooting and 3-for-3 from the freethrow line.  She also grabbed eight rebounds and had four blocks.  Senior wing Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, MN, Champlin Park) contributed 10 points toward the win, while junior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) added eight points.

This win tonight, along with Concordia's loss to Hamline, made CSB the lone possessor of the second-place position in the MIAC, right behind Gustavus.

Up next, the Blazers travel to St. Olaf on Wed., Feb. 3 to take on the Oles at 7:30 p.m.  A reminder that Sat., Feb. 6 is National Girls and Women in Sports Day as CSB takes on Concordia in Claire Lynch.  All girls dressed in sports apparel get in free.
