Blazer Ice Hockey Loses 3-2

BOX SCORE

Despite leading by two goals late in the second period, the College of Saint Benedict (0-2, 0-0 MIAC) ice hockey team fell by a score of 3-2 to Saint Norbert College in Saint Cloud this afternoon. Playing at the Municipal Athletic conference the Blazers showed potential and promise with a period and a half of strong play before fading to the Green Knights.

Junior forward Amie Ernst's (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) goal at 05:42 in the opening period got the Blazers on the scoreboard first. Ernst was assisted on the play by junior forward Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area). Just 54 seconds into the second period, sophomore forward Ashley Olson broke the game open when her shot found the back of the net to put the Blazers up 2-0. Sophomore forward Alexandra Carlson (Prior Lake, MN, Academy of Holy Angels) and sophomore defender Linnea Chruscielski (Duluth, MN, Duluth East) assisted Olson on the play.

Saint Norbert then took control of the game scoring three consecutive goals within a five minutes span late in the second period and early in the third. The Green Knights were able to sneak shots past first-year Blazer goalie Kaitlyn Rolando (Lake Elmo, MN, Tartan High School), who was making her first collegiate start in the net for Saint Benedict. While allowing three goals against, Rollando recorded an impressive debut tallying 37 total saves for the Blazers.

Senior forward Gretchen Leyendecker (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) led all Blazers with seven shots on net; including three quality chances. Ernst, Graske, and Olson finished with six, five and four shots respectively.

With less than a minute to play and on the defensive end of a power play, the Blazers went on a two to one breakaway down the ice exciting the crowd before Ernst's slap shot went wide.

Saint Benedict remains at home for their next game, Thursday November 11th against Bethel. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the Municipal Athletic Complex in Saint Cloud, Minnesota.
