CSB Volleyball Drops Tough Match to St. Olaf 3-2

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (17-9 overall, 6-3 MIAC) lost a tough 3-2 match to St. Olaf this evening in Northfield, MN.

The Blazers controlled the pace of the first set, jumping to a 9-4 lead.  Here CSB capitalized on a 5-1 run to lead 14-5.  The Blazers used a .375 hitting percentage to lead 20-10 before going on to win 25-15.

St. Olaf jumped the gun in the second set, putting together a 12-6 lead over CSB.  The Blazers took a 4-0 run to bring the score with two at 12-10, but couldn't get any closer.  The Oles extended the lead to seven at a 20-13 score, and though the Blazers brought the margin closer, St. Olaf went on to win 25-21.

The third set began tight with the score tied at nine.  Here, the Oles strung together a 7-1 run to lead 16-10.  CSB was able to fight back with a 9-3 run and tie the score at 19, but St. Olaf prevailed, winning 25-20.

CSB found some momentum in the fourth set, using an 11-5 lead at the set.  The Oles were able to bring the score within one at 14-13, but the Blazers kept their distance, winning 25-21.

In the final set, the Oles began with a 3-1 lead over the Blazers.  A few points later, the score was tied at six before St. Olaf moved ahead 11-7.  CSB was unable to make up the distance, eventually losing 15-9.

Four Blazers totaled double-digit kills tonight - senior middle blocker Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) had 14, junior outside hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) added 13, senior right side hitter Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart) had 12, and first-year outside hitter Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) added 10.  First-year setter Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) compiled 50 set assists, while first-year libero Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) contributed 19 digs.

CSB competes against the University of St. Thomas on Wed., Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. for the Blazers last home match of the regular season.
