Blazer Volleyball Cruises Past Luther 3-0

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (13-7 overall, 3-1 MIAC) remains undefeated in the Border Battle tournament with a 3-0 win over Luther this morning.

The first set started tight with a 6-5 Blazer lead.  CSB managed to extend that lead to 12-7, but the Rams brought it back within one at 12-11.  Luther kept fighting back, keeping the score within one at 18-17.    Later in the set, with the score tied at 22, the Rams found their first lead at 23-22, but the Blazers came right back, scoring three consecutive points to win 25-23.

CSB kept its momentum up, starting the second set with a 9-4 lead.  Cornell struggled to overcome that distance, never closing the gap by more than five points.  The Blazers picked up another win at 25-17.

The final set began with a 6-5 Blazer lead, at which point CSB moved ahead by four points with a score of 11-7.  The Rams kept on the Blazers' tails, tying the score at 16 a piece.  The teams exchange the next few points, at which time the score was tied at 21.  CSB then took the lead for the final time, moving on to win 25-22.

Junior outside hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) led the Blazers with 16 kills, while senior right side hitter Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart) came up with 13 kills.  Schumacher also added four blocks.  First-year setter Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) compiled 39 set assists, while first-year outside hitter Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) totaled 14 digs.

The Blazers take on Cornell this afternoon at 3 p.m. in the last match of the Border Battle.  Tournament champions, tournament MVP and All-Tournament team will be announced following the match.
