The College of Saint Benedict (11-7 overall, 3-1 MIAC) defeated Wartburg 3-1 in the Blazers' first match of the Border Battle Tournament.
The Blazers came out strong in the first set, starting with a 9-5 lead over Wartburg. The Knights battled back to tie the score at 15 and eventually take the lead. CSB couldn't fight back as Wartburg went on to win 25-21.
The Knights started strong in the second set, leading 5-2 at the start. The Blazers kept battling, tying the score at six, seven and eight before taking the lead for the rest of the set. An 8-2 run put CSB ahead 16-10. Wartburg couldn't come back as the Blazers took the match 25-22.
A 10-4 Blazer run started the third set. CSB continued to extend their lead, coming up with scores of 17-9 and 20-12 before winning 25-13.
CSB again controlled the final set, jumping to another 10-4 lead at the start. The Knights managed to tie the score at 15 but never gained the lead at the Blazers went on to win 25-21.
The Blazers were led by senior right side hitter Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart), who compiled 17 kills and six blocks. Junior outside hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) also added 14 kills, while first-year setter Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) totalled 49 set assists. FIrst-year Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) had 11 kills and 22 digs for CSB.
CSB will play Simpson tonight at 8 p.m. in Claire Lynch to conclude Day 1 of the Border Battle Tournament.
