The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (0-0 MIAC, 0-0-1 overall) fought off an aggressive Wisconsin-Eau Claire offense to force a 0-0 tie in double overtime in the Blazers' season opener on Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, MN.
The Blugolds controlled the entire game, outshooting Saint Benedict 19-3. But senior goalkeeper
Shannon Strohm (Burnsville, MN)collected 13 saves to keep the Blazers in the contest. The defensive play of sophomores
Sami Meyman (Inver Grove Heights, MN) and
Kelsey Faber (Eden Prairie, MN) also contributed to stopping Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the two overtime periods, in which each team tallied only one shot.
First-year Shyla Gilbertson led the Blugold offense with four shots-on-goal.
Next up, the Blazers travel to Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 pm.
