Blazer Volleyball Finishes Close Second Place in Tournament

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (10-4 overall, 1-0 MIAC) swept Bethany Lutheran College in three sets to finish the CSB Holiday Inn-Vitational undefeated.

The Blazers weren't the only team in the tournament to finish with a 4-0 record; the other three MIAC schools - St. Olaf, St. Catherine and Hamline - all remained unbeaten as well.

CSB controlled the three sets, winning each 25-15, 25-17 and 25-10.  The Blazers dominated the pace of all three, never falling behind.  They were led by junior middle hitter Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo), who had ten kills.  Outside hitters Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) and Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) had eight kills each.  Senior middle blocker Candace Bartels (Glencoe, MN, Glencoe-Silver Lake) contributed six blocks, while junior right side hitter Amber Wortz (Fairfax, MN, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) added 14 digs.  Senior setter Beth Hanson (Faribault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) also had 35 set assists.

As the tournament ended, the four MIAC teams were tied for first place in the tournament, and the final winner was determined by point differences.  CSB took second place behind St. Olaf with difference of only three point between them.  Jaynes and Hanson were named to the All-Tournament team.

Up next the Blazers travel to Roseville, Minn. to take on the Royals of Bethel University on Wed., Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
