The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (5-4 overall, 1-1 MIA-C) lost a close 3-2 match to the #7-ranked University of St. Thomas (8-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) in the championship of the Augsburg Tournament this afternoon.
The first set started off with a quick 4-0 Tommie lead, but the Blazers closed the gap and tied the score at eight. Both teams exchanged point for point until a 15-15 score, at which point, UST began to pull ahead, eventually winning 25-15.
CSB secured a 10-5 lead to begin the second set before the UST tied the score at 12 and took the lead for the rest of the set. Although the Blazers closed the gap at 17-19, the Tommies finished with a 25-22 win.
The Blazers began the third set unwilling to lose 3-0. They had a 10-6 lead and held the Tommies off, lengthening their lead to 20-12 and eventually winning 25-13.
The fourth set was much like the first as CSB maintained a lead and eventually won 25-18.
Set five began as both teams exchanged points with a 4-3 UST lead, at which point they pulled away from CSB. The Blazers kept up a fight but eventually lost 15-6 to the Tommies.
Junior middle hitter
Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) finished a stellar tournament with 15 kills and six blocks. Senior outside hitter
Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) also had 12 kills and 17 digs. Junior right side hidder
Amber Wortz (Fairfax, MN, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) led the Blazers with 19 digs while senior setter
Beth Hanson (Faribault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) contributed 40 digs. Brown and Hanson were also named to the All-Tournament team.
