Blazer Basketball Defeats Carleton 73-55 in Home Opener

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (4-1 overall, 2-0 MIAC) defeated the Knights of Carleton 73-55 in the Blazers' home opener in St. Joseph, Minn.

The first half began with a low score as the Blazers led 4-2 before the Knights jumped ahead 7-6 with 13 minutes remaining.  Carleton kept the lead until nine minutes remained on the clock, at which point CSB pulled ahead 13-12.  The Blazers capitalized on a 10-2 run over a three-minute period before heading into the locker room with a 33-25 lead.

Carleton fought back at the start of the second half, closing the gap to within three points for a 37-34 Blazer lead with 16:30 remaining in the game.  CSB then jumped on a 17-2 run over the next 6:30 to lead 54-36 with 10 minute left on the clock.  The Knights crept close, bringing the score with 11 with six minute remaining.  However, an 8-0 Blazer run left CSB ahead 68-49 with 3:30 left on the clock, securing the 73-55 Blazer win.

The Blazers were led by junior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer), who contributed shot 50% from the field for 17 points, grabbing six rebounds as well.  Junior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) also added 16 points, while senior Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, MN, Champlin Park) sunk three 3-pointers for 13 points.
