Improved Effort Leads to Blazer Win

The  College of Saint Benedict (1-1-0, 0-0-0) MIAC sent the crowd home happy as they showed a much better overall team effort in defeating Finlandia University 3-1 this afternoon at the MAC in Saint Cloud. With three different goals by three different players, the team shrugged off any rust or pregame jitters they had the night before in playing a much more complete game; including out shooting Finlandia 30-13.

The Lions got on the scoreboard first in the opening period as they were able to corral one of their two shots in the period past Blazer sophomore goalie Lauren Herzog (Mendota Heights, MN, Convent of the Visitation).  Herzog stopped 11 of 12 shots for Saint Benedict as she frustrated Finlandia all day with her stellar play around the net. Sophomore center Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids) drew the Blazers even late in the first as she scored a great breakaway goal by faking out the goalie before burying the puck in the back of the net. Yelle, was assisted on the play by sophomore forward Andrea Parsons (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo).

With both teams coming out of the locker room tied in the second, Saint Benedict wasted little time as sophomore forward Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) scored her second goal in as many days putting the Blazers up for good 3:51 in the second. Ernst was assisted on the play by first year defender Catherine Pollock (Tonka Bay, MN, Hopkins High School). Playing in only her second collegiate game, Pollock recorded her first points as a member of the Blazers as she made her presence felt by posting two assists on the day. Just over three minutes later sophomore forward Katelyn Bounds (Anchorage, AK, Bartlett) put the game away for good with her first goal on the season at 07:01. Bounds was assisted on the play by Pollock and sophomore forward Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area).

The Blazers are back in action next weekend as the team takes on Saint Olaf in Northfield, MN. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 pm, November 15.
