Blazers Fall 3-2 to Oles

Playing a non-conference game against Saint Olaf College, the College of Saint Benedict (1-2-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) fell this afternoon by a score of 2-3. The Blazers, playing their final game before the MIAC season opens next weekend, head back to the MAC after playing a solid game that ended up not going their way.

Saint Olaf got on the scoreboard first when senior forward Kayla Hill snuck the puck past sophomore Blazer goalkeeper Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)) on a power play opportunity. Helminen recorded 31 saves on the day including 18 saves in the first period.

The Oles went up 2-0 early in the second when first-year forward Alison Umland scored her first goal of the season at 07:02. Saint Benedict answered late in the second when sophomore center Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids) scored her second goal of the season at 13:50 to pull the Blazers within one at 2-1. Yelle was assisted on the play by junior forward Gretchen Leyendecker (Rochester, MN, Lourdes). Both teams continued to play back and forth until Umstand, with 12 seconds remaining in the period, recorded her second goal of the game putting the Oles up for good 3-1.

The Blazers made it a one goal game when Leyendecker scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Yelle and sophomore forward Andrea Parsons (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) at 16:48 in the third period. Despite pulling Helminen at the end of the game, the team was unable to get another puck past Saint Olaf goaltender Erin McNamara.

Leading the Blazers on the ice were Yelle, Parsons, first-year forward Ashley Olson (Fairmont, MN, Fairmont High School), sophomore forward Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola), and first-year forward Sarah Williams (Huntington Beach, CA, Mater Dei High School), who each recorded four shots on goal. Overall Saint Benedict recorded the shot advantage on the ice, outshooting the Saint Olaf 38-24.
The Blazers are back in action next Friday as they take on the University of Saint Thomas at the MAC in Saint Cloud. The puck drops at 7:30 pm.
