Unbeaten Streak Ends for Blazers

A winning streak dating back to early December came to an end today as the College of Saint Benedict (4-4-1 MIAC, 6-5-1 overall) lost at Ridder Arena to the College of Saint Catherine 4-2. As was the case the night before, the Blazers were unable to string together three solid periods on the ice allowing in three Wildcat goals during the second period.

Senior forward Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Simley) put Saint Benedict on the scoreboard first, scoring unassisted at 19:14 in a first period that saw the Blazers outshoot the Wildcats 15-9. From then on however, the team only got off 12 shots the rest of the game falling behind 3-1 before first-year forward Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) scored 1:30 into the third period. Ernst was assisted on the shot by first-year center Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids) and first-year forward Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area). Saint Catherine put the game out of reach when they scored with just under 20 seconds in the game on Blazer sophomore goalie Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)). Helminen made her fourth straight start in goal for the team, collecting 24 saves.

Saint Benedict returns home next weekend to take on MIAC powerhouse Gustavus. The Gusties are winners of the previous four MIAC titles. The game is on January 30 at 7:30 pm at the MAC in Saint Cloud.
