Showing why they are ranked number one in Division III, Gustavus Adolphus College bullied the College of Saint Benedict (6-6-1, 4-6-1 MIAC) as they won tonight's matchup 5-1.
The Gusties got off to a quick start scoring twice in the first period before the Blazers were able to answer back just over five minutes in the second. Saint Benedict came out of the locker room skating faster and stronger during a period where they looked like equals to the defending MIAC champions. Head coach Pat Michaud credited the adjustment from learning and getting a feel of the Gusties game in the first.
“It's hard to prepare for a team like Gustavus unless you actually get on the ice with them,” Michaud said. “They are a very fast and very skilled team and after our first period adjustment we skated with them for the rest of the game.”
First-year forward
Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) scored the Blazers only goal of the night on a nifty wrist shot that appeared to hit the top of the cross bar on its way into the net. The goal, assisted by first-year forward
Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area), was Ernst's sixth on the season.
The Blazers were able to get ample chances but were unable to get any opportunities to go their way. First-year center
Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids) recorded a great pass from senior forward
Ashley Davenport (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Simley) that left her one-on-one against the goalie but Gustavus was able to make a great save stopping the shot. Ernst also had a two-on-one breakaway in the second before getting off a good shot that sailed just wide.
Sophomore goalie
Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)) started in goal for the Blazers collecting 24 saves while teammate first-year goalie
Lauren Herzog (Mendota Heights, MN, Convent of the Visitation) had seven saves as she finished the game in the net. Saint Benedict was lead by Graske, Ernst, Yelle and Davenport who each had three shots on net accounting for 12 of the teams 22 shots.
The Blazers travel to Saint Peter to finish the series against Gustavus hoping experience gained tonight will pay off in tomorrow's match. The puck is scheduled to drop at 2 pm.
