Blazers Take 3rd Place at Augsburg

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team finished a strong weekend at the Augsburg College Invitational, defeating Northwestern College-Roseville and host Augsburg

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team finished a strong weekend at the Augsburg College Invitational, defeating Northwestern College-Roseville and host Augsburg to claim third place honors.  Junior Beth Hanson (Fairbault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) (Faribault, Minn./ Bethlehem Academy) received All-Tournament Team honors for the Blazers as well.

The Blazers started off the day against Northwestern College-Roseville in a back and forth match.  The Blazers were down 1-2 going into the fourth game, but fought back and nabbed the victory in five games, 19-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23 and 15-10.  Hanson and first-year Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) (Wyoming, Minn./ Forest Lake) lead Saint Benedict with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

In the third place title match, host Augsburg looked to knock of the Blazers in what turned out to be another tight match. Saint Benedict took the series lead 2-1, but faltered in the fourth game.  In the deciding game CSB was able to hold on and win the match 23-25, 27-25, 25-14, 23-25 and 15-11. Junior Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./ Hibbing) set the pace for the Blazers with 17 kills and 22 digs. Sobieck added 13 kills and 14 digs and junior Andrea Millerbernd (Littlefork, MN, Littlefork-Big Falls) (Littlefork, Minn./ Littlefork-Big Falls) contributed 20 digs in the victory.

The Blazers host the Holiday InnVitational September 12th and 13th at Claire Lynch Hall at the College of Saint Benedict.  CSB starts off the tournament against MIAC rivals St. Olaf at 3pm and Hamline at 7pm on Friday.
