Blazers Knock Off Gusties, 1-0

The College of Saint Benedict Blazers (1-2 MIAC, 4-3 overall) notched their first MIAC win this sunny afternoon after shutting out the Gustavus-Adolphus Gusties (0-1-1 MIAC, 1-2-4 overall) 1-0 in St. Joseph, Minnesota.  Both teams accumulated 18 fouls in an aggressive conference match up, with 11 in the second half alone.

The Blazers were outshot by the Gusties in the first half 2-6 but fired back six shots into the Gustie's territory to their four in the second half.  Sophomore goalkeeper Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) rejected four of her eight saves in the first half.  In the 76th minute,  senior forward Tina Lisk (Louisville, CO, Monarch)  avoided the Gusties' defenders and scored for the win.  This is Lisk's second goal of the season.

“Our training throughout the week really paid off.  There was so much team energy on and off the field today.  We found the level we are capable of playing at.”  Coach Kate McNeil said of today's victory.

The College of Saint Benedict Blazers will return to their home field to take on another MIAC challenger,  the Bethel University Royals, on Wednesday, September 24th at 4 p.m.
