Blazers Play Well in Loss to Bethel

The College of Saint Benedict (2-2-0 MIAC, 4-2-0 overall) lost a close game against Bethel University 1-0 today at the MAC in Saint Cloud, MN. In a well played game by both teams, Bethel was able to grab momentum in the first scoring at 14:04 while outshooting the Blazers 18-1.

CSB has nothing to hang their heads about after splitting the series with Bethel, a MIAC playoff team from a year ago. “That's MIAC ice hockey right there,” head coach Pat Michaud said. This was a good weekend for a young team, we got into some penalty trouble in the first, but I thought we played well in the second and third. I'm happy we were able to get some points this weekend.”

When first-year forward Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) and first-year defender Rachel Welz (Oconomowoc, WI, Oconomowoc) were called for penalties early in the first period, the Blazers were faced with a 5 on 3 situation. Bethel seized the opportunity, belting nine of their first period shots during that time. 14:04 into the period, the Royals Bethany Murphy-Aultman scored on an assist by Allison Papko putting Bethel up for good 1-0.

Blazer sophomore goalie Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)) had a great game for the team, stopping 26 of 27 shots. Twice in the second period Bethel had breakaway shots that Helminen either laid out on the goal line to make the save, or came out to break up the shot.

Saint Benedict heads into Thanksgiving break in contention in the MIAC standings. The team's next game comes against rival Saint Thomas at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, MN. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
