Blazers Fall to Rival Saint Thomas

Ninth ranked Saint Thomas (7-0 overall) overwhelmed the College of Saint Benedict (2-3-0 MIAC, 4-3-0 overall), winning 6-0 while proving they are one of the top teams in the MIAC conference. Playing at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, the Blazers were unable to recover after going down 2-0 at the start of the first period while being outshot 15-7. The loss was the Blazers first on the road, where they carry an impressive 3-1 record.

“We started out too slow and tentative today, they got us on our heels and we just weren't able to recover,” head coach Pat Michaud said of his team's loss. “We know we will have to play a more complete game to beat a team like that.”

First-year goalie Lauren Herzog (Mendota Heights, MN, Convent of the Visitation) had a good game as she started in goal for the Blazers, making 30 saves for the team. The Tommies were able to get two goals and an assist from first-year forward Jamie Tiede and with the win move into sole possession of first place; bringing their current unbeaten winning streak to seven games.

The Blazers, who were able to outshoot the Tommies in the third period, feel confident going into the series finale for the two teams December 5.

“After the first period today there was a much better game than the score would indicate,” Michaud said. “We are a good team and coming into tomorrow I think we just need to win more battles on the board and get some power play goals.”

CSB looks to come into tomorrow's game feeding off the energy of the home crowd and start the first period off being aggressive and controlling the puck. Faceoff for the series finale of this rivalry between the two schools' is at 2 pm. at the MAC in Saint Cloud, MN.
