Blazers Beat Bethel in OT

For the second time this season, the College of Saint Benedict (2-1-0 MIAC, 4-1-0 overall) went into overtime. And for the second time, they emerged the victor. CSB defeated Bethel University 2-1 scoring 3:46 into overtime at Bethel University Arena in Blaine, MN.

The Blazers knew going into the match they would have to contain the Royals one-two punch of senior forwards Bethany Murphy-Aultman and Sandra Felten who at game time lead the MIAC in scoring. Sticking to their game plan, the team executed defensively holding the pair without a point.

First-year forward Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) scored 5:46 into the second period, assisted by fellow first-years forward Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area) and center Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids) to put the Blazers up 1-0. The goal was Ernst's fourth on the season, which currently leads all first-year ice hockey players in the MIAC. Later in the second, Bethel evened the score on a power play at 19:12.

As the two teams battled in the final period, sophomore goalie Abbie Helminen (Brighton, MI, Brighton (Belle Tire)) made save after save stopping 38 of 39 total shots in the game. When the horn sounded signaling the end of the period, both teams remained tied and headed to overtime.

Just over three minutes into overtime and taking advantage of a delayed penalty on Bethel, the Blazers pulled Helminen from goal giving the team six scorers on the ice. The move paid off with Yelle scoring her first colligate game winner and sending CSB back home with the victory. Senior forward/defender Stephanie Kendrick (Osceola, WI, New Richmond) and first-year Andrea Parsons (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) assisted Yelle on the play.

Five games into the season, the Blazers have already equaled their win total from last year. The team returns to the MAC in Saint Cloud November 22 to finish the series with Bethel. Faceoff is scheduled for 2 pm, and a win would assure head coach Pat Michaud his highest win total since taking over as coach of the Blazers.
