Blazers Hold off Pipers; win streak reaches 12

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (19-3 overall, 6-0 MIAC) won a tough contest against Hamline University (11-8 overall, 2-4 MIAC) in four sets, 23-25, 25-18, 27-25, and 25-22.  The victory marks the 12th straight match won by the Blazers.
In the first set CSB fell 16-22 but stormed back on a 7-1 run to cut the score to a one point deficit.  Attack errors by the Blazers allowed the Pipers to score the next two points and win the set.
Hamline was clinging to a 10-11 lead early in the second set, but Saint Benedict picked up the pace and charged to a 15-7 run to win set two.
The two MIAC competitors traded points for the entire third set, deadlocked at 25.  But thanks to a service error by the Pipers, junior hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing)was able to win the set with one of her 13 kills.  Jaynes also added 15 kills for CSB.
In the final set of the match, the Blazers were able to claim an early lead and never looked back, highlighted by junior setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, MN, Bethlehem Academy)(50 assists).  Sophomore middle blocker Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) led Saint Benedict in kills (15) and first-year hitter Sobieck contributed 11 kills and 13 digs.
CSB heads to the Minnesota-Iowa border battle this weekend, with their first match on Friday, Oct. 10 against Simpson at 2 p.m.
