The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (25-3 overall, 8-0 MIAC) overcame to a 2-1 match deficit to remain unbeaten against Carleton College (9-12 overall, 4-4 MIAC), winning 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-12.
The 21st ranked Blazers fell behind early in the first set 6-8 but finished it off on a 19-8 run. Junior setter
Beth Hanson (Fairbault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) had 11 of her 50 assists in the first set to lead CSB. The second set was a back and forth match, notching the score at 23-23 until the Knights rallied for the next two points to clinch the set. Carleton jumped to a 12-4 lead early in set three and never looked back to take a 2-1 match lead.
Saint Benedict picked up the pace in set four and won tied the match thanks to a 12-0 run midway through the set. The MIAC rivals were neck and neck through most of the fifth set, but important kills by sophomore right side hitter
Amber Wortz (Fairfax, MN, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) (10 digs) and first-year hitter
Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) (17 kills) ignited the set and match win for the Blazers. Junior hitter
Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing) led the team in kills with 18 and contributed 17 digs, and junior libero
Andrea Millerbernd (Littlefork, MN, Littlefork-Big Falls) also added 17 digs for Saint Benedict. CSB faces Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. for their next match
