ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Sara Wennerstrand didn’t waste any time making an impact on the College of Saint Benedict softball team.
Wennerstrand, a first year from Baxter, Minn., had four hits, three RBIs and a perfect fielding percentage Saturday in her collegiate debut to help the Blazers sweep UW-Stout at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud. For her big weekend, Wennerstrand has been named Blazer Athlete of the Week.
In her first game as a Blazer, Wennerstrand showed her potential at the plate as she led off the third inning with a solo home run to put Saint Benedict up 3-0. She recorded 12 putouts from first base and didn’t have any fielding errors in CSB’s 5-3 win over the Blue Devils.
Wennerstrand continued to impress in the second game as she finished 3-for-4. She had a double in the first inning and came around to score on a wild pitch, then singled in the third inning and later came around to score. Wennerstrand recorded her second double of the game in the fifth inning to send in two more runs and help the Blazers end the game early in the 12-1, five-inning victory over Stout.
Wennerstrand called the shots behind the plate in the second game and finished with four putouts. She also helped first year pitcher Taylor Ellingson strike out three batters. The Blazers gave up a single run and just three hits in the nightcap Saturday.
Two games into her CSB career, Wennerstrand is 4-for-7 and batting .571 for the Blazers. She has 16 putouts and three RBIs to her name.
Wennerstrand and the Blazers are off until they head to Clermont, Fla., where they play 12 games as part of their annual spring break trip. The trip starts March 1 with seven-inning games against John Carroll and Augustana (Ill.).
