LA CROSSE, Wis. – First-year
Emma Theisen (Rosemount, Minn.) matched a career high with four goals, but the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (4-6, 2-4 WIAC) fell in a close 8-7 decision to UW-La Crosse (10-4, 4-2 WIAC) in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday.
UW-La Crosse netted the game-winner with 20 seconds remaining on Megan Mahoney's third goal of the game. The Bennies led, 4-3, at halftime and carried a 6-4 advantage into the fourth quarter before UW-La Crosse rallied with a 4-1 edge in the final period. The loss snapped CSB's two-game winning streak.
Rayna Malmberg (Stillwater, Minn.) contributed a goal and two assists, while
Bella Brisk (Oceanside, Calif.) and
Tess Cavanaugh (Edina, Minn.) each added a goal.
Theisen, now third on the team with 20 goals, scored four times on seven shots while adding three ground balls and four caused turnovers. She had her third straight multi-goal game and the fifth overall this year. Malmberg also recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Defensively, first-year
Ashley Fischer (Madison Lake, Minn.) made eight saves. Senior
Ella Steinke (Plymouth, Minn..) collected four ground balls, and sophomore
Leah Hahs (Lakeville, Minn.) added three.
CSB went 19-for-22 on clears and held advantages in shots (32-21) and ground balls (35-32), while also recording seven draw controls.
The Bennies return home for Senior Night on Wednesday, April 22, hosting Hamline at the CSB Turf Field at the SAF.
