ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a historic start to its flag football era, the College of Saint Benedict (3-0) travels to the Northwestern-St. Paul jamboree on Saturday, April 18 at Reynolds Field in St. Paul, Minn.
The Bennies are set for a trio of games, starting at 11:00 a.m., when they face UW-Stout (2-1). CSB will also take on Augustana (2-1) at 12:15 p.m., and Northwestern-St. Paul (1-2) at 2:45 p.m.
This week's play will determine seeding for the double-elimination Midwest Flag Football Championship at TCO Stadium in Eagan on Saturday, April 25.
Historic Start
The Bennies opened their inaugural season by going 3-0 at the Saint Benedict Jamboree, defeating Gustavus, 39-12; Concordia-Moorhead, 13-6; and Augsburg, 26-7. The Bennies outscored their opponents, 78-25, and never trailed in any game.
Drew Buslee (Eagan, Minn.) shined on both sides of the ball, hauling in four touchdown catches—including the first in program history—while adding two extra-point conversions and totaling over 100 yards of offense (93 receiving, 10 rushing). She also made a major impact defensively, recording two interceptions, including a pick-six.
Alaina Pundsack (Shoreview, Minn.) added 109 all-purpose yards on offense, with a rushing touchdown, while
Avary White (Stillwater, Minn.) hauled in five catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. White also had an interception on defense.
Duo at Quarterback
Peyton Boyd (Farmington, Minn.) and
Nora Schmidt (Shoreview, Minn.) both saw time at quarterback, combining for seven touchdown passes (three from Boyd, four from Schmidt). Schmidt also rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Boyd contributed defensively with an interception.
Lockdown Defense
In their three victories, CSB limited opponents to just 25 combined points (8.3 per game), including holding Augsburg (7 points) and Concordia-Moorhead (6 points) to single digits.
Bartos at the Helm
CSB is led by first-year head coach Joe Bartos. Since 2015, he has been the head football coach at Little Falls (Minn.) High School, and also assumed head coaching duties for both the boys and girls track and field teams at the high school while working as a fifth-grade teacher at Lindbergh Elementary School.
In addition to his high school coaching responsibilities, Bartos serves as a senior youth development coach in the Minnesota Vikings organization.
Bartos received his undergraduate education from the University of Minnesota Morris, where he was a three-year letter winner at cornerback for the Cougars. Bartos also holds master's degrees from Saint Mary's University (Minn.) and the American College of Education.
