CSB Tennis records 5-2 MIAC victory over Concordia

SARTELL, Minn. -- With wins in four of six singles matches plus the double point, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team (3-5, 2-2 MIAC) earned a 5-2 MIAC decision over Concordia-Moorhead (7-7, 2-2 MIAC) on Sunday at Sta-Fit in Sartell, Minn.

With the victory, St. Ben's improved to 2-2 in the MIAC and sit 3-5 overall. Next for CSB will be a nonconference matchup against Northwestern-St. Paul at the SJU-Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville on April 11.

CSB won the doubles point by earning wins at all three matches, including No. 1 in which first-year Ellie Huber (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and junior Marie Labenski (Northfield, Minn.), registered a 6-4 decision over Tanis Lee and Alysaa Sommerfeld. It was the second win of the year for Huber and Labenski. At No. 2, the Bennies' tandem of sophomore Allyson Yahn (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and junior Ella Marohl (St. Cloud, Minn.), won for the third time this year, recording a 6-3 win against Erin Borchard and Olivia Walter. Then at No. 3, Lila Collins (Brainerd, Minn.) and Claire Erdal (Brainerd, Minn.) won their third match of the season with a 6-0 decision against Annalise Skrade and Ava Lowman of Concordia.

In singles play, the Bennies took four of the six decisions with the Bennies setbacks coming by tiebreakers. At No. 1 singles, Lee was victorious over Huber, 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 0-1 (3-10). At No. 4 singles went to Concordia's Skrade, who had a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory against Collins.

At No. 2 singles, Marohl earned her third win of the season with a straight set 6-0, 6-4 verdict against Alysaa Sommerfeld.  At No. 3 singles, Yahn won a tiebreaker for her third singles win after a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) decision. Labenski won at No. 5 for her second singles win over the season, taking a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Ava Lowman. Then at No. 6, first-year Kaitlyn Rahne (Hutchinson, Minn.) earned her third win in a straight set 6-1, 6-2 decision against Olivia Walter.
