Siska scores two goals but (RV) CSB Hockey falls to No. 2 Augsburg, 3-2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The (RV) College of Saint Benedict hockey team received two goals from Helena Siska but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 setback to No. 2 Augsburg in MIAC play on Friday night at Ritsche Arena.

Saint Benedict (12-6-4, 7-5-3 MIAC) came out strong, fueled by first-year center Helena Siska (Naperville, Ill.). She put the Bennies in control late in the opening period, scoring on the power play at 15:47. Senior Presley Kraemer (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) collected her sixth assist on the play, while sophomore Merrill Delich (Andover, Minn.) added her seventh.

Siska struck again early in the second period. Just 3:53 in, she finished an even-strength opportunity for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Junior Emily Wendorf (Minnetrista, Minn.) notched her seventh assist and senior Jamie Bimberg (Chanhassen, Minn.) recorded her fifth as the Bennies built a 2-0 cushion. The two-goal effort gave Siska 22 points on the year.

But the Auggies (18-3-1, 12-2-1 MIAC) answered swiftly. Aunna Schulte cut the lead in half at 4:01 of the second period, scoring at even strength with help from Kelsi Ries. Later in the frame, Schulte struck again — her 10th goal of the season — tying the game 2-2 with 7:08 remaining. Nora Stepan and Kate Haug assisted on the equalizer.

Augsburg completed the comeback at 14:15 of the second period when Ella Olson netted her 12th goal of the season at even strength. Stepan picked up her second assist of the night on what proved to be the game-winner.

In net, first-year Lexi Badali made 16 saves for the Bennies, while Marissa Passke turned aside 24 shots for Augsburg. Saint Benedict finished with a 26-19 advantage in shots on goal, led by Siska's five. At the faceoff circle, the Bennies won 51 percent of their draws, going 26-for-51. Senior Chloe Lewis (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) won 12 of 22 faceoffs, and Siska claimed eight of 18.

Despite the setback, Saint Benedict remains tied for third place in the MIAC standings with (RV) Gustavus Adolphus College. The teams will meet again Saturday at 4 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
