Soccer Secures Crucial Draw with Carleton

Bennies lock in hosting rights for MIAC Playoff Quarterfinals

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - Taking on the tall task of Carleton College, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team walked away with a crucial scoreless draw Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24. With the draw, CSB (11-1-3, 6-1-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) secures hosting rights for the MIAC Playoff Quarterfinals, as the Bennies will finish either third or fourth in the conference. It will be Saint Benedict's first appearance in the conference tournament since 2023, the 14th in program history.

The Bennies stellar defensive efforts were highlighted by a seven-save shutout effort for senior Rhianna Anya (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson Sr.). Her, along with the stalwart defensive back line of sophomore Scarlett Johanson (South Saint Paul, Minn./South St. Paul Secondary), junior Sienna Chase (Tustin, Calif./Orange Lutheran) and first-year Mia Schellenberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park), limited Carleton's (11-1-2, 9-0-1 MIAC) offense to 14 shots on the night, just seven on frame.

As a team, Saint Benedict finished with nine shots, two shots on goal and a corner kick. The Knights notched the advantages with 14 shots, seven shots on target and six corner kicks.

Carleton found itself with the first scoring opportunity of the night, but a shot from Katherine Mallon sailed just high to keep the contest scoreless eight minutes in.

Sophomore Elly Prairie (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) nearly put the Bennies on the board first in the 17th minute. Prairie split through the Knights defense to meet a pass from senior Averi Soli (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine), but her shot finished off-target as she battled her defender.

Anya came up with a pair of saves at the 22 minute mark, scooping both shots up for easy saves. Saint Benedict's defense was tested in the 26th minute, as a foul granted the Knights a close free kick. Anya perfectly read the shot, as her diving efforts kept the score at zeroes.

Sophomore Emma Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./Eastview) sent one in from deep in the 30th minute, but CC's Avery Trapp hauled in the shot to close out the first half of action.

Soli got a good look in the second half, but her boot in the 53rd minute was too high to find the back of the net.

Not afraid to shoot one from deep, first-year Eva Gower (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) ripped one from deep three minutes later. The first-year could not get it past the hands of Trapp, as she hauled it in for a save.

The best look of the afternoon came in the 59th minute in favor of the Knights. Carleton's Lola Feuror beat everything but the right post, as her shot pinged off the iron to gift the Bennies a break.

Anya closed out the scoreless bout with a pair of clutch saves in the final 10 minutes, securing a big point in the MIAC standings, and a big draw for the National Power Index (NPI) ratings, as Carleton came into the contest at 22nd while CSB was 44th.

Saint Ben's will close out the regular season Saturday, Oct. 31, at The College of St. Scholastica. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Kenny Harkins Field in Duluth, Minn.
