Soccer Cruises Past Concordia for Fifth Straight Win

Bennies blank Cobbers, 4-0

MOORHEAD, Minn. - For the fourth consecutive match, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team shut out its opponent, as the Bennies secured a 4-nil road win at Concordia College Saturday, Oct. 17. The win, which is the fifth consecutive for CSB, improves Saint Benedict to 11-1-1 on the year, 6-1-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action. Concordia drops to 5-7-1 (4-4 MIAC).

Saint Ben's secured statistical advantages in shots (15-7), shots on goal (10-5) and corner kicks (5-4), while Concordia squeaked out a 6-5 edge in saves.

First-year Eva Gower (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) guided the offense with a pair of goals, logging her third career brace. Sophomore Veronica Warren (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and first-year Mira Jackson (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) also net goals, with Jackson's being the first of her young career. Four different Bennies added assists, as sophomores Elly Prairie (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park), Allison Cammerrer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) and Scarlett Johanson (South Saint Paul, Minn./South St. Paul Secondary), and first-year Ella Verkinderen (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview).

In goal, senior Rhianna Anya (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson Sr.) and first-year Samantha Hartnett (Saint Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville) split the shutout for CSB. Anya made a pair of saves in the opening half, while Harnett locked in the victory with a career-best three saves.

Saint Ben's needed just four minutes to get on the board, as quick touches from Prairie and Cammerrer drew the CC goalkeeper far from home. The opportunity gifted Warren a golden opportunity, as the sophomore wasted no time to put the visitors up, 1-nil.

The Cobbers looked to level the score at one two minutes later, but Anya came through with a save to keep the Bennies in front.

Prairie looked poised to put Saint Benedict up by two, but she narrowly missed the back of the net as the keeper just got a hand on the ball.

With three minutes left to play in the first, Johanson connected with Gower for a goal, giving the visitors a 2-nil lead into halftime.

Gower completed her brace, this time using a dish from Verkinderen to do so, as she upped the lead to 3-nil in the 67th minute of play.

Jackson secured the dagger, as she registered her first collegiate score in the 88th minute, finalizing the road win, 4-nil.

Saint Ben's will remain on the road, heading to St. Olaf College for a 3:30 p.m. battle Tuesday, Oct. 20.
