ST. PETER, Minn. — Behind goals from seniors
Grace Fitzgibbons and
Addison Stephani, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team secured a 2-0 road victory over Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, Sept. 27, extending their winning streak to four and remaining undefeated in conference play.
The win moves the Bennies to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC, putting them in a tie for first place in the conference standings alongside St. Catherine (8-1, 3-0 MIAC). It was also a milestone moment for head coach
Steve Kimble, who recorded his 100th career MIAC win. Kimble's overall coaching record now stands at 159-95-35.
Saint Benedict opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Fitzgibbons found the back of the net for her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career. After that, both defenses held firm, and the game remained a tightly contested 1-0 battle well into the final minutes.
With just 25 seconds left in regulation, Stephani sealed the win. Her low shot beat the Gustavus keeper at the 89:35 mark, giving CSB a 2-0 lead. The goal was her third in the past two games and her team-leading sixth of the season—good for fourth in the MIAC. Stephani now has 10 goals in her career.
In goal,
Rhianna Anya was steady once again, making six saves in a full 90-minute effort. Anya has now gone four straight games without conceding a goal, a streak spanning 212 minutes. She has allowed just one goal all season and owns an impressive 0.30 goals-against average and a .968 save percentage with 30 saves.
Despite being outshot 15-10 overall, the Bennies edged Gustavus in shots on goal, 7-6. Both teams earned four corners.
Up next for Saint Benedict is a return home for another MIAC showdown, this time against Augsburg. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the CSB Turf Field at Schoenecker Athletics Fields.
