The College of Saint Benedict tennis team (5-6, 2-3 MIAC) secured a 7-2 victory over Concordia-Moorhead (0-18, 0-9 MIAC) in MIAC play at Court Plus on Sunday, April 6. With the win, the Bennies improved to a 5-6 overall record and 2-3 in MIAC competition.
Senior
Sophia Jonas played a pivotal role in the match, winning both her No. 1 singles and doubles matches. Jonas, who is now 3-7 on the season, triumphed in singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Anna Hacker. She then teamed with
Kate Perbix for an 8-0 victory in No. 1 doubles against Hacker and Emma Farder.
The Bennies also dominated at No. 3 doubles, where
Ella Marohl and
Lila Collins earned an 8-2 win over Isabelle Smith and Claire Kimman of Concordia. However, in a competitive No. 2 doubles match, Annalise Skrade and Ava Lowman of Concordia edged out
Allyson Yahn and
Ava Stritesky 8-6.
CSB also claimed victories in the No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 singles matches. At No. 3, first-year player Yahn improved to 4-6 on the season with a 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) win over Skrade. Sophomore
Ryanna Steinhaus, who is now 4-7, defeated Lowman in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4.
Lila Collins, a first-year, moved to 6-4 for the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Smith at No. 5. In No. 6 singles,
Marie Labenski remained perfect on the season, improving to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kimman.
Ella Marohl faced a tough challenge at No. 2 singles but was narrowly defeated by Farder in a hard-fought match, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).
The next match for the CSB tennis team will be on the road against Hamline University at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, at InnerCity Tennis in Minneapolis, Minn.
