NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In the season finale, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team (7-11, 2-8 MIAC) faced a tough test on the road Sunday, falling, 9-0, to nationally ranked No. 28 Carleton(14-3, 9-1 MIAC) in a MIAC matchup.
CSB had some quality efforts but fell shortly against the nationally-ranked Knights. Carleton swept both singles and doubles play to improve to 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the MIAC. The Bennies moved to 2-8 in conference play and 7-11 overall.
CSB's most competitive singles match came at No. 6, where
Marie Labenski battled into a third-set super tiebreaker before falling, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) to Clara Mast. At No. 1 singles,
Sophia Jonas put up a strong effort but ultimately fell to nationally ranked Amelia Asfaw, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles, CSB's No. 2 duo of
Ava Stritesky and
Lila Collins pushed Carleton's team of Ingrid Smith and Ryann Witter before dropping an 8-5 decision. CSB's No. 1 team of Jonas and
Kate Perbix fell, 8-2, to Amelia Asfaw and Marian Nechiporuk of Carleton while the No. 3 team of
Ella Marohl and
Allyson Yahn dropped an 8-2 decision to Amanda Black and Kat Smiricinschi.
In the other singles matches, No. 2
Ella Marohl fell to Mariam Nechiporuk, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3,
Allyson Yahn fell to Miriam Shteyman, 6-2, 6-1 while
Ryanna Steinhaus dropped a No. 4 singles match to Kiley Pickens, 6-1, 6-1. In addition, Ryann Witter of Carleton had a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Lila Collins of CSB.
