No. 5 seeded CSB Basketball falls to top-seeded Bethel in MIAC semifinals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Junior forward Kira Young scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds while senior forward Olivia Boily added 10 points and eight rebounds in a MIAC playoffs semifinals loss by No. 5 seeded College of Saint Benedict basketball team (17-10) to top-seeded Bethel (22-4) at the Robertson Center Gym on Thursday (Feb. 27).

CSB closes its season at 17-10 after reaching the MIAC semifinals for a third straight year. With the loss, CSB is 18-17 all-time in MIAC playoffs play.

After leading 18-15 in the first quarter, Bethel had a 29-4 run in the second quarter to grab control of the game. In the second half, Bethel had a 35-28 advantage to earn the 79-50 decision.

Leading the offense for the Bennies was Young who had her 20th career double-digit scoring game with 11 points and eight rebounds as she made four field goals and a three-pointer. She also recorded an assist and steal. Boily closed her career with 10 points and eight rebounds as she registered her 17th career double-digit scoring game. She ended her career with 541 points and 329 rebounds. Junior guard Megan Morgan added nine points. Senior guard Sophia Jonas hit her 264th career three and finished her career with 1,154 points.

Key to Bethel's win was a 48-to-26 margin of points in the paint, led by the double-double of Elly Schmitz (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Emily Erickson's 14 points. Bethel also had an 11-to-7 margin in second chance points, 41-to-27 rebounds advantage and a 32-to-11 margin in bench points.

Overall, CSB was just 19-of-62 shooting from the field for 30.6 percent, which included 5-of-22 from three-point range. CSB was hurt by making just 2-of-14 shots in the second quarter after making 7-of-16 in the first quarter and taking the lead.

In the game, the Royals hit 31-of-53 field goals for 57.4 percent, including 7-of-18 from three-point range and 10-of-13 at the foul line. Bethel overcame the first quarter deficit by converting 12-of-15 field goals for 80 percent in the decisive second quarter.
