CSB Soccer drops defensive battle to St. Olaf, 1-0

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- In a closely contested defensive contest, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team (5-7, 3-2 MIAC) dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Olaf (10-1-1, 4-0-1 MIAC) on Saturday (Oct. 4) at the CSB Turf Field.

St. Olaf, now 10-1-1 overall and unbeaten in MIAC play (4-0-1), managed to break the deadlock in the 85th minute. Marit Klagge found the back of the net off a pass from Emily Johnson, delivering the game's only goal.

The Bennies, now 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC, remained resolute on defense throughout the match. Goalkeepers Rhianna Anya, a junior, and first-year Claire McGrath combined for eight saves—three in the first half by Anya and five more in the second from McGrath—to keep CSB in contention.

While St. Olaf controlled possession and tallied a 24-3 edge in shots and 4-0 advantage in corner kicks, Saint Ben's remained disciplined and organized on the back line. Defensively, the team has been sharp in recent weeks, conceding just five goals over their past six games, a stretch that includes four wins.

On offense, CSB's limited chances came from first-year Sienna Chase, junior Summer Seamans, and first-year Veronica Warren, each registering a shot.

Up next, the Bennies hit the road for back-to-back MIAC matchups, visiting Macalester on Oct. 11 and Carleton on Oct. 14 as they look to rebound and stay in the hunt for a playoff spot.
