Haley Zelen and outstanding contributions from first-year
Anna Schottler and senior
Megan Bartels, the College of Saint Benedict swim team placed second in the team rankings at the St. Catherine Pentathlon on Saturday, Oct. 11.
Saint Benedict totaled 5,150.5 points to finish just behind NCAA DII Concordia-St. Paul with 6,514 and ahead of St. Catherine, 3,874 in third and Hamline, 911.5 points, in fourth place.
In terms of individuals, Zelen won four events, including setting school records in the 100 fly and 100 IM, to finish first among individuals of the five-event pentathlon. She was just ahead of Sophie Lee of Concordia-St. Paul, a DII school, with 413 points. Aside from two school records and four event wins, she had a top-three program mark in another event.

Zelen captured the 100-yard butterfly in a school record of 57.09, breaking the 2011 mark of Ellen Dean, who clocked 59.13. She also won the 100 IM in a school record clocking of 59.76, which surpassed Anna Birklid's 2021 time of 1:00.80. Zelen won the 100 breaststroke by clocking 1:08.56, a mark that is 10
th in CSB program history. The fourth event won by Zelen was the 100 freestyle as she clocked 53.19, a mark that places her third all-time at CSB in the event.
Zelen was second in the 100 backstroke with a clocking of 1:00.63, finishing just ahead of junior
Mary Morris, who was third in 1:00.91.
Schottler was third in the 100 freestyle in 55.10; and fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.65. Also in the 100 butterfly, first-year
Josey Larson was seventh in 1:04.20; and first-year
Isabella Anderson, eighth, 1:04.26. Schottler also took fifth in the 100 IM in 1:04.89, a mark that ranks 10th in program history.
Bartels took eighth in the 100 IM, by clocking 1:05.71 with a personal-best in the event. She was seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.33.
Next for the CSB Swim and Dive Team is the CSB/SJU Fall Invitational on Oct. 18 at the Warner Palaestra Pool in Collegeville.
