ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Despite goals from Jenna Timm and Chloe Lewis, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (9-5-1, 6-3-1 MIAC) dropped a 3-2 decision to Saint Mary's (11-5-0, 6-4-0 MIAC) on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Ritsche Arena.
With the loss, Saint Benedict drops to 9-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in MIAC play, holding fourth place with 18 MIAC points. Saint Mary's, which is 11-5-0 overall, moves into third place with a record of 6-4-0 in conference games, earning 19 points. In the weekend series, SMU won by scores of 3-1 and 3-2 in closely contest games.
Tonight, SMU opened up a 3-0 lead in the opening period to take control before CSB rallied to draw within, 3-2.
At 5:13 of the first period, SMU's Celia Midtbo scored an even handed goal off assists from Tavernie Sherner (4th assist of the season) and Leah Parker (3rd assist of the season). The Cardinals pushed the lead to 2-0 at 15:20 of the period after Sidney Polzin had her 10th goal of the season and third in the two-game series with CSB. Her even strength goal was assisted by Kas Kingston (sixth assist of the season) and Magoli Fillion (1st assist of season). Then, 1:22 later, Allie Urlaub had her fourth goal this season to push SMU's lead to 3-0. Jenna Kurkowski (3rd assist of season) and Anna Braun (2nd assist of season) assisted on the goal.
CSB started to rally behind the strength of junior Chloe Lewis's fifth goal of the season and 11th of her career at 3:20 of the second period. She scored the even-handed goal off sophomore Shae Stinnett's sixth assist and 13th point of 2024-25.
Down 3-1, the Bennies drew closer when senior Jenna Timm tallied her 16th career goal and fourth of the season at 18:48. Sophomore Emily Wendorf had her eighth assist of the season on the play. However, in the final 1:12, the Bennies could not push the game-tying goal across.
Overall, CSB had a 36-to-24 advantage in shots as Ella Tuccitto had a team-high seven shots. Six other Bennies had three shots. In face-offs, St. Ben's had a 28-27 advantage for a 50.9 winning percentage. In goal, senior Kate Moffat made 21 saves, including nine in the third period. Over the two games, she had 44 total saves.
Next for CSB will be a home-and-home series with Hamline on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The Bennies host the Pipers on Saturday with a 6 p.m., start time at Ritsche Arena.
