ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore
Emily Wendorf and junior
Chloe Lewis both had a goal and an assist to lead the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (9-3-3, 6-1-1 MIAC) to a 4-1 win over St. Catherine (4-10-1, 2-6-0 MIAC) in MIAC play on Saturday (Jan. 18).
With the victory, St. Ben's captured its third straight win and ninth in the past 12 games as they improved to 9-3-3 overall. With the MIAC victory, CSB is now 6-1-1 and has moved into a second-place tie with No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus (10-4-0, 6-2-0) and sits just behind league-leader Augsburg (11-2-1, 7-1-0). Next for CSB will be a pair of home games against Saint Mary's on Jan. 24 (7 p.m.) and Jan. 25 (4 p.m.).
Over the past three games, CSB has a 15-3 scoring edge including consecutive wins over St. Catherine by scores of 6-2 and 3-1. Aside from Wendorf, CSB had goals from sophomore
Shae Stinnett,
Shauna Miller, and
Chloe Lewis, who had both a goal and assist on the night.
The Bennies had a 26-22 edge in shots against St. Catherine while the Wildcats had a 35-32 margin in face-offs.
CSB opened up a 3-0 lead in the opening period and added another goal in the final two minutes of the third period for its ninth win of the season.
Sophomore
Shae Stinnett registered her sixth goal of the season (2
nd on CSB) with assists from
Chloe Lewis and
Ella Tuccitto at the 8:36 mark of the opening period to give CSB a 1-0 lead. The goal gave her six goals and six assists for 12 points, which is a team-high total.
The Bennies moved ahead 2-0 on Miller's even strength goal at 13:17, which was assisted by
Morgan Cromwell. Miller recorded her third goal of the season and ninth of her career.
At 17:15 of the first period, Lewis recorded her fourth goal of the season and 10
th of her career on a power play for a 3-0 lead. Wendorf (7th, season) and Salscheider (9th, season) assisted on the play. Down 3-0, SCU had a power play goal from Ana Myers with 56 seconds left in the second period. Then, Wendorf closed the scoring on an unassisted goal at 18:34 of the third period for a 4-1 lead. Wendorf now has five goals in her career and has nine points on the season (seven assists).
In the net, senior
Kate Moffat allowed one goal and recorded 21 saves, including 11 in the opening period. Over the past two games, she has recorded 46 saves and improved to 6-2-1 on the season with her 17 career wins ranking sixth in school history. Moffat lowered her goals allowed per game to 1.97 for seventh in the MIAC and her .921 save percentage is sixth in the league.
