OSHKOSH, Wis. – No. 12 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (40-4) turned back the College of Saint Benedict softball team (24-17), 4-1, in the opener of the NCAA DIII Tournament Regional on Thursday afternoon on a rainy, overcast day.
The Titans recorded its 40
th win of the season and advanced to play the winner of the Wartburg/Illinois Wesleyan game at 11 a.m., on Friday, May 17. The Bennies, which will face the loser of that second game today, dropped to 6-11 in NCAA III Regional Tournament play.
UW-Oshkosh opened up a 3-0 lead in the second inning and CSB couldn't rally against the Titans' pitcher Sydney Nemetz, who improved to 18-2 on the season with a complete game victory. She allowed one earned run with five strikeouts across seven innings.
Sophomore
Ellie Peterson (13-6) took the loss for CSB after allowing five hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings. Junior
Addy Bowne allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings while sophomore
Olivia Wallace gave up just one hit in two innings in the circle.
On offense, CSB had five hits, including a double by junior
Maddy Kubik, who also scored a run. The Bennies also had hits from junior
Megan Erickson, sophomore
Bryn Ruhberg, sophomore
Cat Smetana and sophomore
Sammy Muetzel. For UW-Oshkosh, Hannah Ritter had two hits and an RBI while Abby Garceau provided two hits and three RBI.
Game Summary -
After a short rain delay in the first inning, the Titans took a 2-0 lead on a two-run, two-out single by Garceau. In the second inning, Ritter's RBI single brought home Morgan Miller for a 3-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, CSB answered with a single tally as Kubik doubled and advanced to third on an infield single by
Bryn Ruhberg. Kubik scored when Ruhberg was caught stealing. In the third inning, UW-Oshkosh added to their lead on an RBI double by Garceau.
