Steinke totals 5 points & Schrubbe scores 3 goals but CSB lacrosse falls to UW-RF

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Lizzie Schrubbe had three goals and Ella Steinke had five points but the College of Saint Benedict lacrosse team (8-4) dropped its regular season finale to UW-River Falls (12-5) in nonconference action on Monday, April 29 at the CSB Athletic Turf Field.

Now, the CSB lacrosse team, which won the regular season championship in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference with a 5-0 record, will host Hamline at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, May 1 in the MLC Playoff Semifinals. If CSB wins, they advance to the MLC Championship game on Saturday, which would also be at home.

For Schrubbe, she now has a team-high 70 points on the season with a team-best 42 assists and 28 goals. Saint Ben's also had multi-goal games from Emma Nelson, Emma Halweg, and Steinke, who led CSB with three assists. MLC Offensive Player of the Week Sami Hackley had a goal as did junior Emma Osland.

Sophomore Grace Fitzgibbons had a pair of assists while Steinke had three assists for five total points. Schrubbe led CSB with eight shots while Halweg had six and Osland totaled five. CSB's goalie Chloe Lewis, a two-time MLC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded 18 saves (second most of her career), including six in the second period and seven in the fourth quarter.

After UW-River Falls took a 4-3 lead after one quarter, CSB had three unanswered goals for a 7-4 lead. The Falcons responded with three straight goals to force a 7-7 tie at halftime. In the third quarter, the visitors had a 3-2 edge and, with a 6-2 margin in the fourth quarter, had the 16-11 victory.

UW-River Falls, which had a 25-15 shots edge in the first half and 24-to-12 in the second half, totaled a 49-to-27 overall edge. They also had a 21-to-17 edge in ground balls and 20-to-9 edge in draw controls. CSB was 19-of-22 on clears while UW-River Falls was 17-of-17.

Game Summary 
In the opening period, UW-RF took a three-goal lead at the 9:44 mark before CSB had the answer. The Bennies had their own three-goal run as Steinke (6:33), Halweg (2:07) and Schrubbe (1:18) tied the game at 3-3. However, Kinlee Knutson's goal with :48 left in the quarter gave UW-RF a 4-3 lead.

In the second quarter, CSB scored four straight goals for a 7-4 lead. Schrubbe (14:12) had her second goal and her score was followed by Hackley (11:09), Steinke (10:03) and Osland (7:27).

Then, UW-RF had two goals from Holly Eckers (7:01, 5:54) and one from Brooke Glumack (5:36) to tie the game at 7-7 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Halweg (10:26) broke the tie as CSB took an 8-7 lead. After two goals by the visitors, Nelson (1:24) tied it up at 9-9. However Glumack's goal with eight seconds left in the third quarter started four-goal run by UW-RF that extended into the final quarter.

Down 13-9, Schrubbe (7:39) took an assist from Steinke to cut the lead to 13-10. The Falcons had two more goals before Nelson's second goal (3:33) cut the lead to 15-11 but Glumack scored again (:53) to close out the scoring.
