ST. JOSEPH, Minn. –

Tori Benson supplied the offense while
Ellie Peterson tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the College of Saint Benedict softball team (12-12, 7-1 MIAC) to its 10
th win in 11 games with a 9-0 run-rule shortened victory in game two and split of a MIAC doubleheader with St. Catherine (10-16, 4-6 MIAC) on Saturday (April 13) at the CSB Softball Field.
In the opening game, St. Catherine earned a 7-2 victory as the two teams split the MIAC doubleheader. As a result, Saint Benedict, which travels to face Macalester on Sunday in St. Paul, is 7-1 in the MIAC and sits in a tie with St. Mary's and Macalester at the top of the league. Overall, CSB is 12-12 with those 10 wins across 11 games.
Today, CSB had two-hit days from
Olivia Tautges, which had a three-run home run in game two; along with
Cat Smetana,
Megan Erickson and
Tori Benson, who had a bases loaded three-run triple to ice the win in game two.
Ellie Peterson (1-0, 0.00 earned run average, complete game, 3K) and
Olivia Wallace (0-0, 2.80 earned run average, 3K) led the CSB pitching staff, which had a 3.50 combined earned run average.
By the Numbers
In four league games this season, Tautges, who was MIAC and Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week, hit .667 with six base knocks in nine at bats, scored six runs and smashed three home runs with seven RBI (1.778 slugging mark.). Smetana had a 13-game hitting streak end in game one but restarted another streak with two hits in game two and now has six hits in 12 at bats for a .500 average over the last four games. Benson had a .462 average in those four games with two home runs and seven RBI (1.077 slugging) while
Megan Erickson batted .455 with two home runs and eight RBI (1.091 slugging).
Ellie Peterson was 2-0 with a 0.64 earned run average, two complete games, a shutout and 10 strikeouts in 11 innings.
Olivia Wallace finished 1-0 with a 1.40 earned run average with five strikeouts in 10 innings.
In going 10-1 since defeating No. 24 Central College, 6-3, CSB is hitting .390 as a team, averaging 8.23 runs per game, and have a .432 on-base percentage. Tautges, who now has an 11-game hitting streak, had six home runs and 20 RBI with 43 total bases while scoring a team-best 16 runs. Sammy Meutzel hit .480 with five RBI, Erickson had a .412 average with three home runs and 16 RBI and .794 slugging mark, with Benson hitting .314 with two home runs and 11 RBI. In the circle, CSB has a 1.58 earned run average, six complete games and 42 strikeouts. Peterson is 6-0 with a 1.05 earned run average, four complete games a shutout and 29 strikeouts in 40 innings.
Game 1 – St. Catherine 7 Saint Benedict 2 (7 innings)
In the opener, Sarah Christy of Saint Catherine held the Bennies to four hits and two unearned runs as she moved to 5-5 on the year after a 7-2 win. In seven innings she did not walk a batter and had three strikeouts as the Wildcats ended CSB's nine-game winning streak.
CSB's offense included hits from four players, including junior Erickson, who also had an RBI. Tautges and Muetzel both had doubles, and junior
Maddy Kubik had a base hit and run scored. In the circle, junior
Addy Bowne (4-2) started and took the loss, working two innings and allowing six hits and four runs with a strikeout. Wallace finished and gave up just two earned runs across five innings while registering three strikeouts.
The Wildcats were led by the top of their order with Annabelle Cook recording four hits and four RBI while Taylor Brunn had three hits and three runs scored. St. Kate's took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame and added three more in the second inning. After CSB scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning to draw within, 4-2, the Wildcats put up two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth inning as they totaled 14 hits on the game.
Game 2 – Saint Benedict 9 St. Catherine 0 (5 innings)
With Peterson winning her sixth straight decision and both Tautges and Benson providing the offense, Saint Benedict rebounded with a 9-0 run-rule shortened win over St. Catherine in game two.
Tautges led the offense after she had a home run and three RBI while scoring twice and taking a pair of walks. Benson had two hits, including a three-run triple. Smetana had two hits and a run scored while Erickson had a double, run scored and RBI.
Peterson was dominating in the circle as she allowed just two hits across five innings with her second shutout of the season. She had three strikeouts in facing 17 batters. She now has four complete games this season. Over her past four starts, covering 22 innings, she has allowed just two runs and 14 hits.
In the first inning, Tautges hammered a three-run homer, her third in four games, to give CSB a 3-0 lead. The Bennies added two more runs in the third inning. Then, in the fourth frame, with the bases loaded, Benson delivered a three-run, bases clearing triple as CSB tallied nine runs on just six hits. In five of the last six games, CSB, which came into the game hitting .314, has scored nine or more runs.
