MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The College of Saint Benedict (1-5) battled against No. 3 Berry (14-2) but dropped a pair of closely-contest games on Monday (March 4) afternoon in nonconference play.
Bryn Carlstrom had three-hits and an RBI and
Cat Smetana hit a home run, but CSB lost in the opener, 6-3. In game two,
Olivia Wallace had her first career complete game and Smetana had a two-run single, but the Bennies fell, 4-3. In history, CSB has played Berry three times including a 12-10 loss on March 7, 2020, in Tucson, Ariz. CSB fell to 1-5 this season but has opened with a tough schedule which includes four losses to nationally ranked teams and a 11-9 win over No. 12 Belhaven.
The Bennies will return to action on Wednesday, March 6 when they play a doubleheader against Piedmont University at 12/2 p.m. (EST).
Notes – Through six games, CSB is led in hitting by senior
Bryn Carlstrom who is hitting .389 with an .839 OPS. Carlstrom, who had four hits in the doubleheader against Berry, is tied for the team-lead in hits with seven. Both senior
Tori Benson and sophomore
Cat Smetana are hitting .350 and have seven hits. Benson is tied with sophomore
Sammy Muetzel in runs scored with four. Muetzel, who is hitting .286, has a team-high four RBI. In the circle,
Olivia Wallace has a pair of complete games and nine strikeouts in 15 innings. Sophomore
Ellie Peterson had 11 strikeouts in 15 innings. Junior
Addy Bowne has the win for CSB and has worked seven innings in four relief appearances.
Game 1 – Berry 6 Saint Benedict 3
Despite Carlstrom's eighth career three-hit game, Saint Benedict dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 3 Berry (13-2) in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday (March 4).
Berry scored two runs in each of the third, fifth and sixth innings to earn its 13
th win as first-year pitcher Ava Fouts (5-1) won her fifth game. Fouts allowed three earned runs with four strikeouts and did not walk a hitter. Senior Danielle Sudlick picked up her second save with two innings of scoreless relief which included a strikeout.
CSB sophomore starter
Ellie Peterson (0-2) took the loss after allowing eight hits and five runs in five innings. She recorded four strikeouts and two walks while throwing 90 pitches. Junior
Addy Bowne finished up for CSB, allowing two hits and an earned run in one inning of work.
In going 3-for-3, Carlstrom had her first three-hit game of the season and the first since going 3-of-4 against Nebraska Wesleyan on May 14, 2022. She had her third 3-of-3 game of her career (Hamline, 4-18-2021 and Augsburg on 4-21-21). She also contributed an RBI.
Sammy Muetzel had a double, run-scored and RBI and
Maddy Kubik doubled.
Smetana hit her first home run of the season and the third of her season as part of the Bennies' three-run fifth inning when CSB took the lead at 3-2. After Smetana homered to cut the lead to 4-1, Muetzel doubled to right center which plated Kubik, who had also doubled. Then, Carlstrom's single brought home Muetzel. In the home half of the fifth inning, Katie White had her third home run of the season with a two-run home run to give the Vikings a 4-3 lead. Then, Morgan Frye also hit her third home run of the season as the long ball gave Berry a 6-3 lead and finished the scoring.
Game 2 – Berry 4 Saint Benedict 3
Olivia Wallace (0-3) threw her second complete game of the season but Saint Benedict dropped a 4-3 decision to Berry in game two of the doubleheader.
Wallace allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out two batters with four walks in six innings in the circle. For Berry, Casey Holloway (2-0) earned her second win of the season after working 5 2/3 innings. She allowed five hits and three runs with eight strikeouts while walking just one batter. Hannah Gore picked up her second save after 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, which include a strikeout.
Benson led CSB's offense with two hits, including a double, and supplied an RBI. Smetana had a hit and two RBI while Carlstrom and
Bryn Ruhberg also recorded base hits.
After Berry opened up a 4-0 lead with a single run in the third frame and three in the fourth inning, the Bennies answered with a three-spot in the top of the sixth inning. Benson's run-scoring double plated
Olivia Van Hout. With two out, Smetana had a clutch two-run single to score
Olivia Laudenbach, who scored her first career run, and Benson as the Bennies closed to within, 4-3.
