ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team (2-8) dropped a pair of nonconference games to Coe College (13-3) on Saturday, March, 23, in the Husky Dome at St. Cloud State University. In the opener, the Bennies fell, 5-4, before losing 4-1 in the second game.
After the pair of close defeats, Saint Benedict fell to 2-8 overall while Coe College moved to 13-3 with the two wins which moved their winning streak to nine games. Next for CSB will be a road trip to Waverly, Iowa, to face Wartburg College on March 29.
Game 1 - Coe College 5 Saint Benedict 4
Despite a team-best fourth complete game this season by sophomore
Olivia Wallace (1-4), Saint Benedict dropped a 5-4 decision to Coe College in the opener of the doubleheader.
Wallace, who dropped to 1-4 on the season, allowed eight hits and five runs in seven innings with five strikeouts. Abby White (2-2) earned the win by throwing five innings while allowing four runs and six hits with three strikeouts. Ellie Thorow earned her first save of the season with two innings of one-hit relief work for the Kohawks.
On offense, the Bennies were led by sophomore
Olivia Van Hout, who had a career-high three hits, including a triple, in four at bats and scored two runs with two of CSB's five stolen bases. Senior
Tori Benson had a two-run single while
Bryn Ruhberg supplied a pair of hits.
Maddy Kubik had a run-scored single and scored a run with an RBI.
The Bennies opened the scoring in the first inning on Van Hout's triple, scoring on
Bryn Carlstrom's ground out. CSB added three runs in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. CSB scored a run on
Maddy Kubik's RBI single and a two-run single by Benson brought home two runs. Coe College scored three runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the six inning to grab the lead.
Game 2 – Coe College 4 Saint Benedict 1
Devan Baggett (3-0) of Coe College earned her third victory of the season with a four-hitter in a 4-1 win over Saint Benedict. Baggett allowed four hits and a run with four strikeouts with two walks.
CSB had hits from
Bryn Carlstrom,
Cat Smetana,
Bryn Ruhberg and
Olivia Van Hout. Smetana had her fifth RBI of the season.
Ellie Peterson (0-4) took the loss for CSB after allowing seven hits and four runs with two strikeouts in four innings in the circle.
Addy Bowne finished for CSB with three innings of shut out relief work.
After Coe College opened the scoring in the first frame, CSB answered with a run in the home half of the second inning on Smetana's run-scoring hit. Then the Kohawks added a run in the second inning and two in the fourth frame to conclude the scoring.
