ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore
Kira Young scored a career-high 20 points and added eight rebounds and three assists but the College of Saint Benedict basketball team (8-5, 6-3 MIAC) lost in double overtime to St. Catherine (9-4, 7-3 MIAC), 86-75, in MIAC play on Saturday (Jan. 13).
With the road loss, the Bennies fall to 8-5 overall and 6-3 for fourth place in MIAC play. St. Catherine improved to 7-3 in the league for third place and 9-4 overall.
Saint Benedict opened a 38-26 lead by halftime before St. Kate's rallied in the second half to tie the game at 63-63 at the end of regulation. In the first overtime, the two teams both scored seven points for a 70-70 tie.
Megan Morgan, who had 14 points, had a three-point play with 31 seconds left in overtime to force a second extra session. Then, SCU outscored CSB, 16-to-5, in the second overtime to earn the win. In that final extra five minute overtime, the Wildcats made 4-of-5 field goals and added seven free throws to earn the win and move into third place in the MIAC.
After hitting 16-of-30 shots in the first half for 53.3 percent, CSB was just 11-of-38 from the field, including 3-of-18 from three-point range, in the second half. The Bennies finished just 27-of-68 from the field for 39.7 percent and made just 7-of-26 from three-point range for 26.9 percent.
For the game, St. Catherine made 30-of-76 shots from the field for 39.5 percent and hit 5-of-13 from three-point range. A key difference was the Wildcats advantage at the foul line. While CSB was 14-of-15 from the free throw line, St. Kate's made 21-of-23 for 91.3 percent. In the second half and overtime, the Wildcats hit 20-of-47 shots for 42.5 percent. At the foul line, they made 17-of-19 while CSB hit 12-of-12. Saint Benedict was outrebounded, 39-31, including 13-to-6 on the offensive boards. SCU also had 13 steals and used a 20-to-10 margin of points off turnovers, plus a 46-to-36 margin of points in the paint, to rally for the win. Additionally, the Wildcats also had a 21-to-4 margin in second chance points.
Young, a sophomore from Hudson, Wis., had her career-high in points, reaching 20-points for the first time as she led the Bennie offense. She hit 7-of-14 field goals and 6-of-6 at the foul line. She also had a career-high eight rebounds and three assists.
In total, CSB had four players score double-digit points. Senior forward
Lydia Hay had her 16
th career double-digit scoring game, including second straight, with 14 points, nine rebounds, an assist, and steal. She was 4-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Sophomore guard
Megan Morgan had 12 points for her fifth double-digit game of the season. Morgan added three rebounds and an assist. Senior guard
Carla Meyer had 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Meyer, who had her 60th career double-digit scoring game, now has 1,028 career points which places her 18
th on CSB's career list (Heather Gillund, 1,024 points, 2007-11). Junior guard
Sophia Jonas just missed double-digits with eight points and four rebounds. She had a pair of triples and now has 164 for her career.
1st Quarter Summary – Meyer scores seven as Bennies lead
Led by Meyer, who opened the game with the first seven points, hitting 3-of-3 from the field, including a three, the Bennies jumped to a 17-10 lead. CSB, which made 8-of-19 field goals for 42.1 percent, opened a 9-2 lead then with baskets from

Morgan Chmielewski and
Megan Driste, CSB had a 17-10 advantage. However, St. Catherine had a three-pointer from Greta Schimnowski to cut lead to 17-13.
2nd Quarter Summary – Hay scores 10 points to lead CSB
Led by 10 points from Hay and a team-shooting percentage of 72.7 percent on 8-of-11 made baskets, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, Saint Benedict had a 21-13 margin in the quarter for a 38-26 lead at the half-time break. Hay opened the quarter with a basket and then made a pair of triples as the Bennies took a 27-22 lead. Meyer's lay-up at the 5:20 mark started an 11-4 closing run. Young's lay-up pushed the lead to 38-26 at 1:18.
3rd Quarter Summary – SCU outscores CSB, 20-12
In the third quarter, St. Catherine outscored CSB, 20-12, to cut the deficit at the break to 50-46 at the break. CSB was 3-of-9 from the field for 33.3 percent while SCU hit 8-of-16 field goals for 50 percent. St. Kate's opened on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 43-37 with under seven minutes to play. At 5:14 Jonas hit a triple for a 46-37 lead. The Wildcats closed on a 9-4 run as CSB's lead was cut to four points.
Fourth Quarter Summary – SCU hits a three at buzzer to force OT
CSB was outscored 17-13 in the fourth quarter as the St. Kate's rallied to tie the game and force overtime. In the quarter, CSB was 4-of-13 for 30.8 percent, hitting just 1-of-6 from three-point range. The Wildcats, which hit 5-of-19 field goals, closed regulation with a 15-7 run, including a game-tying three-pointer from Hattie Fox, who had a game-high 21 points.
Overtime – Morgan's late three-point play forces 2nd OT
Both teams scored seven points in overtime with
Megan Morgan's three-point play with 31 seconds left tying the game. SCU scored a pair of baskets in overtime to take a 67-65 lead at the 2:53 mark when Fox converted a lay-up. Hay's foul shots tied the game at 67-67. But Hattie Fox converted a three-point play for a 70-67 lead at the 1:56 mark. Then, Morgan's three-point play with 31 seconds left tied the game at 70.
Second OT – Wildcats outscore Bennies, 16-5
In the second overtime, the Wildcats outscored CSB, 16-5, hitting 4-of-5 field goals for 80 percent and 7-of-8 free throws. CSB was just 2-of-8 from the field for 25 percent. After St. Kate's took a 72-70 lead, Jonas knocked in a triple for a 73-72 lead. However, the Wildcats scored seven straight for a 79-73 lead. Then, finished with a 6-2 run to grab the win and move into third place in the MIAC with the victory.
