ST. CLOUD, Minn. – With a balanced attack, which included goals from six different players, and a first career shutout from
Donelle Decker, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (5-4-2) rolled to a second straight win in a 6-0 non-conference decision over Dubuque (2-8-0) on Saturday (Dec. 9).
With the victory, the Bennies improved to 5-4-2 after scoring a total of 14 goals in the two home wins over Dubuque. CSB, which has a 4-2 home record, will be off until hosting Lake Forest College in a pair of home non-conference match ups on Jan. 4-5 at Ritsche Arena.
"The team had a great weekend. Dubuque plays a very tough defensive game, and it took us two periods in both games to figure out how to score," said CSB head coach
Lindsay Macy. "I am very proud of this group for their relentless pursuit of scoring goals. And a shout out to Donelle (Decker) on her first shutout.
In her second career start, goalie
Donelle Decker did not allow a goal in 60 minutes in goal as she recorded three saves in her first career shutout. The Bennies out shot Dubuque, 55-to-3, on the night. The Bennies controlled the play on the ice by winning 46-of-69 face offs, including 16-of-22 by
Ava Stinnett and 11-of-16 by
Shauna Miller as well as 12-of-22 by
Mia Lopez.
Leading the offense was a pair of junior forwards –
Ava Stinnett and
Aurora Opsahl, who both scored goals for the second straight night. Stinnett had a goal and an assist as she now has a team-high nine goals and two assists for 11 points. Stinnett, who tied a school record with four goals on Dec. 8, had five total goals this weekend which pushed her career total to 21. Opsahl, who tallied two goals last night, added another in the third period tonight as she now has seven on the season and 24 in her career.
While she did not score a goal, senior forward
Corrine Brown had three more assists and now has a team-high 10 on the season and leads CSB with 12 points. She set a school record with five assists on Dec. 9 and with three tonight had eight on the weekend.
In the opening period, CSB had a 15-to-1 shots edge but neither team came up with a goal. Junior
Sami Boerboom opened the scoring on a power play goal at 12:55 of the second period as
Chloe Lewis and
Shauna Miller had their first assists of the season. Boerboom tallied her ninth career goal. In the period, CSB again had a wide margin in shots at 17-to-2.
In 2023-24, the third period has been productive for CSB with 21 goals, including 11 in the past two games. After scoring six last night in the third period, CSB had five in the final period against Dubuque tonight.
Junior
Morgan Cromwell had her first goal of the season and second of her career with an unassisted even strength tally a 2-0 lead at 3:10 of the third period. Just a few seconds later,
Ava Stinnett scored her ninth goal this year for a 3-0 lead as Opsahl and Brown assisted on the play. At the 6:49 mark of the third period, Opsahl had her seventh goal of the season for a 4-0 lead. Assisting on Opsahl's even-strength goal was A. Stinnett and Brown. CSB pushed the lead to 5-0 at the 13:35 mark when first-year
Emily Wendorf had her second goal of the season off an assist by Brown. Finally, the Bennies closed the scoring at 19:25 when first-year
Brooklyn Johnson had her third goal of the season off an assist by
Sydney Hunst.
