ST. CLOUD, Minn. –
Jamie Benzie scored a career-high two goals to lead the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (1-3, 1-0 MIAC) to a 5-2 victory over Concordia-Moorhead (1-0, 0-1 MIAC) in the season MIAC opener for both teams at Ritsche Arena.
CSB, which will travel to Concordia-Moorhead for a 2 p.m., game on Saturday, Nov. 11, scored two goals in each of the first two periods to gain a 4-2 lead and then added an empty net goal late in the third period for the 5-2 decision. The five goals by CSB are the most since recording six goals in a home win over Wisconsin-Superior on Nov. 22, 2022.
Benzie, a senior from Moose Lake, Minn., had two goals in a game for the second time in her career. Tonight, she matched the two goals she scored at Saint Mary's on Nov. 20, 2021. She now has nine goals in her career. The Bennies also had goals from senior
Ava Stinnett, who had her second of the year and 14th career goal;
Presley Kraemer, who netted her sixth career goal; and junior
Emma Rooks, who had her 11
th career goal.
Concordia opened the scoring with an even-strength goal at 6:03 of the first period when Taylyn Cope scored off assists from Abbey Reule and Taylor Severson for a 1-0 lead. CSB quickly answered with Stinnett's second goal of the season at 9:58.
Jenna Timm had her first of two assists on the night on the game-tying score. Later in the first period, the Bennies took the lead for good as Kraemer had an even-strength, unassisted goal at 9:58 for the 2-1 lead.
The Bennies built a 3-1 lead when Rooks had her first goal of the season at the 2:57 mark of the second period. Timm's assist led to the even-strength goal by Rooks and a 3-1 CSB advantage. At 14:36 of the second period, Benzie had her first of two goals on an even strength tally off an assist from Rooks as CSB led, 4-1.
The Cobbers drew within, 4-2, when Jerica Friese tallied a power play goal at 18:25 of the second period. Assisting on the goal was Grace Doerring and McKenzie Oelkers.
Benzie culminated the scoring at 19:46 on a power play empty net goal off first-year
Emily Wendorf's first-career assist.
The Bennies had a 27-to-22 shots advantage, including an 11-to-6 margin in the first period. CSB converted its first power play goal of the year.
