CSB falls to Concordia in the first round of the MIAC Soccer Playoffs

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict (9-6-3) dropped a 2-0 decision to Concordia-Moorhead (8-5-4) in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs at the CSB Stadium Turf Field on Monday (Oct. 30).

Despite holding a 24-to-11 shots advantage, including nine on goal, the Bennies were unable to put any goals on the board. CSB also had a 5-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the setback, CSB had its season draw to a close in the opening round of the MIAC Playoffs. After finishing tied for third in the MIAC at 6-3-2, the Bennies lost for the first time in the past seven games. It was the first home loss for CSB in the past two years as the Bennies' record remains an impressive 12-1-5 in those games. CSB finished 5-1-3 at home in 2023.

Despite the setback, CSB head coach Steve Kimble was pleased with the hard work and effort of his team today and all season.

"This is such a great team. I am so proud of the season they had. The seniors are amazing leaders. Our underclass players have so much potential. Everyone is a 'true Bennie' with high character and it has truly been a pleasure to coach them," Kimble said.

A 13-time playoff participant, including each of the past six years, CSB had its all-time series record against Concordia fall to 32-15. The teams split the two meetings in 2023 with CSB recording a 2-0 win on Oct. 11 before the Cobbers won the playoff matchup today.

Concordia, which advances to the second round of the MIAC playoffs, opened the scoring at 21:22 when Hannah Mukhtar scored off an assist by Clara Rooney. The Cobbers, which were out shot, 11-to-5 in the first half, took a 1-0 lead to the break. At the 84:37 mark, Concordia finished off the scoring when Sophia Robinson recorded a goal off a penalty kick at 84:37 for the 2-0 lead. The Bennies also had a 13-to-6 margin in shots in the second half.

In goal, CSB's Annie Waters, who was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier on Monday, had five saves in facing 11 shots in 90 minutes of play. On offense, CSB was led by senior Abby Willenbring, who had six shots, including two on goal in 62 minutes. Alli Voss added three shots and had one on goal.
