ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – With a double double from
Emma Guest (11 kills and 11 digs), the (RV) College of Saint Benedict (17-6, 9-1 MIAC) volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Concordia College (14-13, 5-5 MIAC) in MIAC play at Claire Lynch Hall.
CSB, which was listed among the seven teams in the NCAA DIII Region IX rankings this week, rolled to their eighth 3-0 sweep of the season. The Bennies have won 10-of-12 games and improved to 17-6 overall with a 9-1 MIAC record. In the victory, the Bennies, which sit in second place in the MIAC standings, hit .162 with 44 kills on 112 attacks while recording 11 service aces and 55 digs.
Guest, a senior, stepped up on Senior Night when the CSB program honored all four of its seniors, including
Olivia Thompson,
Paige Andries and
Mackenzie McDonald. In addition, CSB also recognized the parents of each of the team members.
In her 20
th career double double (seventh this season), Guest had 11 kills on 32 attacks while hitting .219. Guest, who now has 28 double-digit kills games in her career, also had two service aces to go with the 11 digs.
In her second career start, first-year
Ingrid Noha had a season-high in service aces and digs. Also for CSB, first-year right side hitter
Brooke Andries had nine kills on 19 attacks and hit .474.
Junior
Audrey Spolidoro added four kills on seven attacks for a .571 hitting mark while contributing 33 set assists, seven digs and two service aces. In her career, she now has 2,338 set assists, which ranks eighth in program history.
Paige Andries also stepped up for CSB with five kills on 10 attacks and hit .500. First-year outside hitter
Kali Jones registered nine kills on 22 attacks for a .182 hitting mark.
Game Summary-
In the opening set, Jones had
five kills, three service aces and four digs to lead Saint Ben's to a 25-15 victory over Concordia. CSB, which was 13-of-16 on side- outs, had 16 kills and hit .293. CSB, led by the serving of Guest, jumped to a 5-0 lead over Concordia. With a kill from Spolidoro and service ace by Jones, the Bennies pushed the lead to 11-3. The Cobbers battled back with an 8-4 run to draw within, 16-11. A kill from
Mackenzie Knofczynski (six kills on the night) and two service aces from Jones gave CSB a 19-12 advantage. Another kill from Guest and a service ace from Jones concluded a 25-15 CSB win in the opening set.
The Bennies led, 5-3, early in the second set. With an 8-to-3 run, the Bennies pushed the lead to 14-6 after a kill from B. Andries. Later her sister, Paige, had a kill as CSB led, 22-13. CSB, which hit .364 (16 kills on 33 attacks) and was 13-of-16 on side outs, finished off the set at 25-16.
In the third set, CSB trailed early before grabbing a 14-11 advantage. Both teams traded points with CSB holding a 22-20 advantage. Then, CSB took control with three consecutive kills from Spolidoro, P. Andries and Guest to close the set and match with a 25-20 decision. The Bennies had 13 kills on 38 attacks and 12-of-21 side outs in the decisive final set.
