CSB softball falls to Oles in MIAC semifinals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team was hoping to make its first appearance in the MIAC Tournament championship game since 2018 Saturday afternoon, but came up just short in its third game against St. Olaf in the last two weeks.

Two Bennie errors allowed the Oles to score a pair of fifth-inning runs and pull away as CSB lost 7-4 in the MIAC semifinals Saturday in Arden Hills. Saint Benedict is 28-8 overall and await the NCAA Selection Show at noon Monday, May 9, to learn their postseason fate.

After beating the Bennies, St. Olaf moved on to take on 12th-ranked Bethel. The host Royals won 5-0 to claim the first MIAC Tournament title in program history and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

CSB got on the board in the top of the first Saturday when Gabby Spencer led off with a single and a bases-loaded walk drove in a run, but the Bennies left the bases loaded, and an RBI single for the Oles tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

St. Olaf scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to go up 4-1, but CSB tied the game thanks to one Ole error and four hits in the fourth. Megan Rasmussen and Jordyn Swoboda got the Bennies going with singles, and one run scored on an Ole throwing error. A single up the middle from Gabby Spencer scored two runs to tie the score at 4-4.

The Oles took the lead for good in the fifth when they scored two runs on two hits and two CSB errors, and added one run for good measure in the bottom of the sixth. Lexi Hanson and Katie Carlson both singled with to put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game and CSB's MIAC playoff run.

Spencer finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Bennies, who had seven total hits. Tiffany Thompson threw all six innings and gave up five earned runs (seven total) on 10 hits. She tied her career-high with four strikeouts.

NCAA Regional host sites and qualifiers will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show starting at noon Monday at www.ncaa.com. The Bennies were ranked first in Region IX when the rankings were last released on May 2. Buena Vista was second and Bethel third.
