ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team is hoping the weather will finally work in its favor to get games in this weekend.
The Bennies are scheduled for a busy weekend with a trio of doubleheaders – including two at home. CSB starts the weekend with doubleheader on Friday, April 8 at home against Carleton beginning at 2:45 p.m. That game was moved from Thursday due to forecasted rain and cold weather. The team hits the road Saturday to take on Augsburg starting at 1 p.m. in Minneapolis, and then returns home Sunday, April 10, to take on Gustavus in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats and video for the home games are available here, stats and video for Saturday at Augsburg is here.
About the Knights
The Knights began their season 12-3 overall. Due to the ever-changing weather conditions, the Knights have yet to play a MIAC contest. Their last game was on their spring trip against Middlebury College, which they won 9-0. Brooke McKelvey leads the team with 22 hits and 18 RBIs. Pitcher Logan Robinson has a 2.62 ERA and 25 strikeouts.
About the Auggies
Augsburg is 8-11 overall and 0-4 in the MIAC heading into Saturday. The Auggies look to snap a four-game losing streak after being swept by both Gustavus and St. Kate's. Meredith Taylor has a team-best .373 batting average and 22 hits, and Olivia O'Connor has a 2.82 ERA and 46 strikeouts on the mound.
About the Gusties
The Gusties are 7-9 overall to start the season. The Gusties began MIAC play with a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg, winning 4-1 and 8-0 on April 2. Madelyn Mueller leads the team in hits with 28 and Kayla Ruud has a team-high 13 RBIs. Pitcher Chloe Smallfield is 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA.
Last Meeting
Saint Benedict swept the Knights in their last doubleheader on April 10, 2021. Lexi Hanson's RBI double fueled a seven-run sixth inning to give the Bennies a 7-3 game one victory. Game two began with a Jordyn Swoboda home run in the first inning to jump start an 8-3 win. Elly Novak got the win on the mound in game two with nine strikeouts.
The Bennies swept Augsburg in 2021, winning 15-0 in five inning and 10-0 in six in Minneapolis. CSB had 28 hits in the two games, and Novak struck out nine in the Game 1 win.
CSB also swept the Gusties in their last doubleheader on April 11, 2021. Explosive first and fifth innings, along with Elly Novak's nine strikeouts on the mound, led the Bennies to a 15-0 win in five innings for game one. Game two started off with a homer from Lexi Hanson in the first inning to help the Bennies shut out the Gusties 4-0 in game two.
The Storyline
Saint Benedict started MIAC play against St. Scholastica after some shifting of schedules but only managed to get through one game due to snowy and rainy weather. The Bennies picked up a 7-1 win over the Saints and will welcome the Saints back to complete game two later this season. The Bennies are 13-2 overall heading into this busy weekend.
Who to Watch
Junior Gabby Spencer, who currently has a batting average of .488, leads the team with 20 runs and 21 hits. Senior Katie Carlson and first year Megan Erickson tie the lead for RBIs with 13 total. Junior Elly Novak leads the pitchers with eight wins and a 0.92 ERA.
