WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The indoor track and field season officially ended yesterday on the East Coast at the NCAA Indoor Championships and Fiona Smith made history as a CSB track athlete to finish her final race of the season.
Smith finished third on Saturday afternoon in the 3000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-American honors, her second All-American honors of the weekend after finishing fourth in the 5K just 24 hours earlier.
Not only did Smith set huge milestones for herself this weekend, but she also set huge milestones for CSB track & field. She is the first athlete in CSB track & field history to earn two All-American honors in one meet and the indoor track & field team's first All-American in the indoor 3K.
This now marks the third All-American honor of the school year for Smith, and fourth of her career so far. She earned All-American honors after placing fifth in the 5K at the 2021 Outdoor Championships and fifth at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships, now adding a fourth and third place finish at her first indoor championships.
Smith finished Saturday's race in 9:45.72, two seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher, Trine's Evie Miller. Loras Senior Kassie Parker won the event with a time of 9:43.81, and Wellesley's Ari Marks was second in 9:44.87.
Now that indoor season is complete, Smith will look to continue her success as she and the rest of CSB track & field begin their outdoor season with a home meet on March 26 at Clemens Stadium.
