CSB softball wins two to wrap up Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team finished up its week in Florida with a pair of wins Friday afternoon. After two days off – one planned and one due to rainouts and poor field conditions – the Bennies came back and beat UMass-Dartmouth 3-1 and Alfred 10-2 in five innings in Clermont.

In the first game of the day, CSB (8-1) took advantage of three Corsairs errors to score the only three runs it would need. Megan Rasmussen doubled in the second and came around to score when Jordyn Swoboda reached on an error to make it 1-0. UMass tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, but the Bennies scored all the runs they would need in the fifth.

Swoboda singled and then stole second, and with two outs, Bryn Carlstrom reached on an error and both she an Swoboda came around to score on a throwing error by the pitcher.

First year Megan Erickson had two of the team's six hits against the Corsairs. Addy Bowne threw the first 4.1 innings to earn the win after giving up a single run and four hits with three strikeouts. Junior Elly Novak earned her third save of the season after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four batters to wrap up the game.

In the second game of the day, CSB used two big innings to break open the game, and then end the game early. In the second innings, the Bennies had two hits and drew five walks to score six runs to go up 6-0. Katie Carlson had an RBI double and Carlstrom had a three-run double to center to go along with two RBI walks. In the bottom of the fifth, Erickson and Sheridan Glashan both had RBI singles and Carlson had a two-run double to center to end the game.

Carlstrom and Carlson both went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to pace CSB, which had seven total hits. Novak improved to 5-0 after giving up two runs – one earned – on three hits in five innings of work. She added four more strikeouts to her weekly total.

CSB returns to action and is scheduled to be at home for the first time in 2022 Saturday, March 19, when it hosts Bethany Lutheran in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at the CSB Softball Field at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
