Bennies tie with Concordia, win shootout in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team played to an overtime tie with Concordia Saturday afternoon, but picked up a key extra point in the MIAC standings thanks to a shootout win in Moorhead.

The tie pushed CSB's unbeaten streak to five games and moved the team's record to 9-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the MIAC with two weekend series left in the regular season.

After a scoreless first period, Corrine Brown got the Bennies on the board with her second goal of the weekend on the power play at the 3:53 mark of the second period. Senior Zoe Culshaw-Klein assisted on the goal. The Cobbers (6-12-1, 2-9-1) tied the game at the 12:44 mark, and that's where the score stayed through regulation.

CSB had a power play opportunity for the final minute of regulation, but the Bennies only got one shot off and it was blocked, so the game went to overtime. The Bennies put a trio of shots on net in overtime, and CSB goalie Maggie Gilchrist also made three saves so the game went to a shootout.

Ava Stinnett scored on CSB's first attempt of the shootout and Gilchrist stopped both shootout shots she faced before senior Annika Brodt made her attempt to end the game and give CSB the extra point.

Both teams finished with 30 shots on net, and Brown and Lily Aamodt both had five shots to pace CSB. Gilchrist finished with 29 saves plus two shootout saves. She had 12 saves in the first period and 13 in the second.

CSB is back in action right away Tuesday, Feb. 8, when it hosts UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. in nonconference action at the MAC in St. Cloud.
